Christie + Co sells Canterbury hotel opportunity to Hotel du Vin

05 August 2008

Acting on behalf of Bellway, the property developer, Christie + Co has sold a hotel opportunity at the Tannery redevelopment in Canterbury, Kent, to Hotel Du Vin for an undisclosed sum.

The Tannery includes approximately 440 residential dwellings together with four retail/commercial units and a bar/restaurant.

Hotel du Vin plans to operate the converted former warehouse on the site as a circa 40-bedroom hotel, which will open in 2010.

Bruce McKendrick, Managing Director of Hotel du Vin said: “We are delighted to be bringing Hotel du Vin to Canterbury, where the brand will deliver a new style of hotel with superb rooms, fabulous wine cellars and a great value bistro & bar. In addition to offering luxurious bedrooms, it will be a great place for locals to meet, eat and drink.”

Kerr Young of Christie + Co’s Investment team said: “We are delighted to have introduced a high quality operator such as Hotel du Vin to this unique hotel opportunity. This is the second hotel opportunity we have sold to Hotel du Vin this year following the company’s purchase in January of the renowned 22-bedroom St Andrews Golf Hotel in Scotland.”

Hotel du Vin was established in 1994 and was acquired by Marylebone Warwick Balfour, which also owns the Malmaison Group of Hotels, in October 2004. Since its foundation, Hotel du Vin has grown to operate a portfolio of 11 individual hotels, including properties in Cheltenham and Glasgow, which were both acquired through Christie + Co.

In addition to the acquisitions in Canterbury and St Andrews, a further three Hotel du Vin openings are planned for this year in Edinburgh, Newcastle and Poole.
